Receipts should include the business name, GST/HST registration number (for registered businesses), date, description of goods or services, and total amount including applicable taxes. The CRA requires businesses to keep records for at least 6 years.

Canada Receipt FAQs

A valid Canadian business receipt should include the business name and address, date of transaction, description of goods or services, amount before tax, GST/HST amount (if registered), PST amount (where applicable), total amount, and your GST/HST registration number if you're a registrant.

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a 5% federal tax. HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) combines GST and provincial tax in participating provinces (ranging from 13-15%). PST (Provincial Sales Tax) is charged separately in BC, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Quebec has QST instead of PST.

You must register for GST/HST if your total taxable revenues exceed $30,000 in any single calendar quarter or in four consecutive calendar quarters. Small suppliers below this threshold can register voluntarily to claim input tax credits.
